Chapter 13 – Wedding Plans

By the time Susan touched down in Heathrow, she was no longer sure of her decision to break off her engagement with David. It felt like she had again returned to being two people: one living in her dreams and subconscious and one who lived in day-to-day reality.

She had promised to marry David and nothing had changed her promise. The plans were now well underway for it to happen. Her family and friends were all excited about this promise of a trip to Australia. While she was still visiting in Australia, she and David had announced their wedding date to their respective families. Once it was announced, their families started busily arranging flights and holidays. They even planned side trips to other parts of Australia, after asking her about places to visit and things to do while in Sydney.

It was like a juggernaut in how quickly it was off and running. She felt powerless to stop it. Her conscious mind wanted this wedding to happen and she hated the thought of derailing all these people’s travel and holiday plans. On top of this, Mark had given her his blessing to be with someone else and wished her happiness in her life. Why should she not take him literally and go off to be happy with this man?

Like last time, her family was waiting to meet her at the airport. In addition, there was a smiling, vibrantly beautiful, excited Anne.

“Oh, Suz! I just can’t wait to go to Australia and be your bridesmaid! Is there really a younger brother who is half as gorgeous as David?! If so, I can’t wait to meet him! Will he be the best man? What dress do you want me to wear? Have you chosen your dress yet? How should we do our hair? Shall we have a girls’ night before we go away?”

Susan held up her hand. “Whoa! With so many questions asked so quickly- I can’t take it all in. Why don’t I just say yes to everything now? Then, we can sit down tomorrow and talk about it properly.”

Over the next week she met with Anne twice to discuss all the wedding details. During this time, they more or less agreed on dresses and the other wedding things which they needed to do. Her parents had come on board easily since they both liked David, much preferring him to Edward. They said they were a bit surprised how fast it was happening but would support her in what she wanted.

At first, her father grumbled about the wedding location being in Australia, not in the local church where all her own extended family and friends could be present to witness the occasion. He said he wanted to pay for a big part of the wedding costs, as they were well off.

Susan understood this offer was partly family pride and partly his practical self. She said, “David and I are happy to have you pay a share of the wedding costs, but we want to pay our own share.
